Character

Name: Platina Berlitz
Fandom: Pokemon special
Gender: female
Age: 12
Time Period: post-platinum arc
Wing Color: light grey
History: wiki
Personality:

The house of Berlitz has huge influence and resources--they operate many high-class resorts and department stores and other businesses across Sinnoh. But they're also a long line of researchers, as well! "Little Miss" Platina Berlitz, the precocious youngest daughter of the family, works as Professor Rowan's personal assistant and has a habit of reading 10 books a day. As such, she has an almost encyclopedic knowledge and can spout off textbook-ready facts about the cities and pokemon she travels to and encounters on her journey. It makes her seem almost like a tour guide, which she does get confused for in the beginning of the series. But... she'd be more like one if she weren't so touristy herself, and way too overenthusiastic over all the novelties she bumps into during her journey. It can be a little hard to take her seriously when she's prone to nerding out over things like coal mining or slot machines or footprints, which she might've read about but never encountered in her high-class life.

As a rather sheltered rich girl, she can be pretty snobby, especially to people she thinks of as 'commoners'. In fact, she spent practically half the Diamond/Pearl arc nameless, since she refused to introduce herself to the two 'bodyguards' who accompany her on her trip to Mount Coronet. Initially, she's blunt and socially awkward and tries way too hard to hide her emotions and maintain the image of a perfect lady. But that can be a little difficult to do when you're just a 12-year-old girl! She laughs at jokes, then immediately denies it; she claims that she can ride a bike when she's never tried before, but keeps falling and refusing help. Eventually, she does learn to open up a little more to her close friends and admits that she's not totally blameless... by writing a letter and listing all the lies she's told over her travels. Many of which were as small as denying laughing at a joke. When she gets down to business, she takes things very seriously.

This is most obvious in her decision to challenge gyms during her travels. Platina never really had an interest in being a pokemon trainer, though she does rely on hers and her bodyguards' to protect her. She stumbled into the world of pokemon battling by chance, but she quickly took to it, to the point that she's willing to get up at 5 in the morning to train her team with the help of her friends. Training isn't just limited to battling, either! Even if she's incredibly knowledgable about a subject, she insists that the best way to study it is through personal experience, and uses this as a personal motto to do the best she can at anything she puts her mind to. Whether it's participating in a pokemon contest, saving her father from imprisonment, or protecting the legendary pokemon of Sinnoh from Team Galactic, she uses her relentless willpower to finish the task at hand.

That determination remains one of her strongest assets, though she does develop into a much more emotionally-stable person overall by the end of the Diamond/Pearl arc. In the beginning of her journey, she was a rude and haughty girl; by the conclusion, she learned to respect 'commoners', is considerably more polite to everyone she encounters, and is just a lot more friendly and approachable in general. But if you happen to face her in a pokemon battle or otherwise stand in the way of her goal? She will put absolutely everything she has--her experiences, knowledge, or headstrong attitude--into winning.

Strengths:

physical.
  • she has amazing hand-eye coordination and memorization skills!... to the point where she can practically godmode slot machines and roulettes.
  • ... can ski and ride a bike. after numerous numerous failures.
  • despite appearances, she's actually moderately athletic! she works out briefly in a department store, and can totally keep up jogging with Candice and Maylene in Snowpoint. apparently she has great cold tolerance because she doesn't even need her platinum outfit coat, too.

mental.
  • she's very book-smart: as mentioned above, she reads 10 books a day back in her estate and can rattle off random facts like a professional tour guide.
  • she can read ancient pokemon texts and hieroglyphs that few other people in Sinnoh can decode. maybe it's a research assistant thing!
  • what she doesn't know through books, she's extremely willing to try to learn through hands-on personal experience. this includes wacky hobbies like coal mining and footprint-collecting, even.
  • great at pokemon battling and tactics. she's a very fast learner.

emotional.
  • she's extremely headstrong and will relentlessly pursue any goal she sets her mind to, from learning to ski to rescuing her kidnapped father or alternate dimension-napped bodyguards.
  • her high-class upbringing gives her ladylike etiquette and poise... but this also tends to make her pretty socially awkward with her 'commoner' friends.

Weaknesses:

physical.
  • Platina can be very vulnerable, even when she has pokemon and faux bodyguards to protect her. she's been kidnapped by bidoofs (yeah... in the second chapter too...), held hostage by a luxio, and chloroformed by her real bodyguards. lately she's getting better at this damsel in distress thing though.
  • ... will hardheadedly collect bruises and scrapes while working on her goals, like riding a bike.

mental.
  • she gets easily excited and distracted by novelty, taking frequent detours from her trip just to tour mine shafts, enter contests, explore a rich stranger's mansion... even her friends notice and get exasperated by her attention span and weird taste.
  • also, she's very naive and lacking in common sense. she seems to be totally oblivious to the spookiness of the Old Chateau, for instance, and even confuses the game corner with a hotel. they both have such bright flashy lights, how was she supposed to know the difference!
  • sometimes she tends to assume everyone is as rich as she is. gosh, why do commoners freak out over destroying a gold statue, those are a dime a dozen!

emotional.
  • Platina tries to act ladylike and talks down to 'commoners', or refuses outright to show even the basic courtesy of introducing her name. this isn't so much of a problem anymore for the most part!
  • ... she used to be pretty paranoid over revealing her identity and being kidnapped. for good reason but hey.
  • super stubborn!! which can be an asset when trying to rescue a parent, but not so much when she almost bikes right off a cliff.
  • she's embarrassingly fond of bad jokes!

First Person: (text, in ladylike handwriting~)

I don't think I'm in Sinnoh anymore.

But what a fascinating place this is! I've never heard of the Luceti region before. It certainly hasn't been mentioned in any of the books I've ever read. Clearly, I should do more research! First of all, I should try to locate a library. There might be some travel guides I could look through and museums I could visit and souvenirs I could bring back to Diamond and Pearl.

Besides these wings, that is. They're so strange! I did try to fly with them earlier, but unfortunately they weren't able to support me. Of course, this just means I need more practice and exercise. Come to think of it, the last time I woke up in a strange place, there was a training gym conveniently nearby... I don't suppose that would happen again, but I should explore and find out anyway. Just in case.

Third Person:

As Platina Berlitz awoke one morning from uneasy dreams she found herself transformed and transported from her bed into an unknown forest, with a brand new pair of wings on her shoulders.

After the first few moments of confusion wore off she just tried to sit upright and examine the wings for a moment. Well, they looked feathery, like a bird pokemon's. And they were definitely attached to her back. And if she concentrated, she could even move them a little. And whoa okay now that she thought about it more this was pretty groundbreaking. How many humans had ever spontaneously grown wings out of nowhere! She had to figure out what happened. Maybe report to Professor Rowan. He could have an idea, he was an expert. On evolution, even! Could she somehow have evolved, like a pokemon did? But that surely wasn't possible!

Or was it...!

Either way, it could be the topic of a brand new research project. She could publish papers! Vaguely she realized that her wings were fluttering madly in her excitement and she wondered if she could try to fly with them. It was worth a try. The only way to find out was through personal experience, after all!

But she frowned as she glanced over her shoulders. Well, on second thought, it was pretty obvious from their size and what she knew of physics that she probably wouldn't be able to do it.

Then again, stranger things have happened. Like doduo learning the fly move! If their vestigial wings could do it, maybe hers could, too... but hopefully without the help of an hm. That would be pretty inconvenient. She finally stood up, glancing around briefly. She'd have to investigate this place in more detail, but afterwards. There was science to be done!

... One scraped knee and a few loose feathers afterwards, she concluded that she couldn't fly with these wings after all.

For now.

pokemon info.
note: all of Platina's pokemon have pokerus!... yes really.

name/species. empoleon
gender. female
ability. torrent
movepool. aqua jet, bubble, blizzard, drill peck, growl, hydro pump, ice beam, metal claw, peck, pound, vacuum wave, water pulse, water sport
notes. main battler and starter pokemon.
nature/personality. socially awkward penguin serious, slightly hot tempered. she used to act very aloof and better-than-thou, like Platina, but like her trainer she's also mellowed out quite a bit over time and is now quite friendly. secretly, she likes dressing up and being pretty!
strengths/weaknesses. she's extremely fast and powerful in the water, but is often outmaneuvered on land. still, she's a tank and can take quite a lot of damage. Platina's strategies sometimes rely on her losing the upper hand at first, but then knocking out the opponent with a sneak attack like vacuum wave or an underground blizzard. that... is something that can happen in pokesupe apparently.

name/species. rapidash
gender. male
ability. flash fire
movepool. fire blast, flamethrower, protect, rest, tackle
notes. first pokemon, mainly used as transportation.
nature/personality. modest, has many things to think about. he's always been pretty mild-mannered and protective, but he probably has to be to carry a proper lady around all the time.
strengths/weaknesses. Rapidash wasn't a very strong battler at first, and often got taken out by opponents in just a few turns. however, he's very agile and can can run circles around slower enemies. although he's still not the most reliable fighter, he's still powerful enough to defeat two bronzong in one fire attack.

name/species. lopunny
gender. female
ability. cute charm
movepool. dizzy punch, focus blast, healing wish, jump kick
notes. first pokemon ever caught. likes breaking other pokes' hearts ♥
nature/personality. naive, has great hearing. she's kinda skittish, but she's quick to rise to the challenge and always tries her best. also, she likes snuggling!
strengths/weaknesses. like Rapidash, she's a bit of a glass cannon and her speed is probably her best asset. that, or her cuteness! she's a little delicate, but she can also sacrifice herself and use healing wish to heal a teammate, or charm the enemy into giving up the fight for her.
